Synopsis

Whenever Next Time Is, the debut LP from Starring MH, was recorded in the summer of 2018 in New York, NY. The album has ten mostly whimsical songs, such as the hit "My Girlfriend's Parents' Beach House" and "I Can't Hear So Well." The title track and "Record Player and a Cat" show a nuanced, perhaps jaded worldview. A fun listen, featuring top-notch players and production.

Record Notes

We recorded at Mozart Street, beginning in March (2018). By May we had a couple tunes in the can, and then I thought, let's shoot for an 'EP.'

As time opened up, and I felt confident in our process and team, and in my material, I strived for a larger collection of songs. Suddenly there was 8 songs. I thought that was ok for a proper album. But there was a song I'd just conceived of during the summer that I thought I could finish after the album as a bonus... until I thought, why not finish it NOW and put it on THIS record. To even it out, I also finished writing a song I had begun 13 years ago. So we did another session, but Ryan's studio was in the process of being moved to near the Navy Yards. We did a session at Six Eight, where I met Mr. Perkin Barnes (who would master the album). The session went well for basic tracking. And I was lucky that a couple weeks later, my brother Kevin visited, and was able to play guitar on the new song. As Mozart continued to be moved, I recorded vocals for a couple songs from my very own home studio.

Things came out well. Working with the guys was a big thrill. I was able to work with a range of cats: my longest time collaborators Hart, Kevin, and Ashford; the engineer/muli-instrumentalist Ryan who I came to rely on for SOUND advice - including vocal coaching, his homie Mike, an outstanding percussionist who is on all tracks; and a fella I know from my 'hoood, Mike S., who I knew was just the guy to beef up some of the deep cuts.

This is a very good album. That's because of the open-mindedness, determination, love and care of all involved. I'm stoked that it is done, and can be listned to.. Enjoy!
